So I've decided that cyclocross is something I need to do. It's been on my radar as awesome for something like a decade now, since it was first explained to a young and naive me in Milwaukee (a race in the same park that the closeted politicians picked up their anonymous gay sex partners at.)
I even commute on a CX bike, but I never really thought of myself as a "racer," although I have raced MTB before...
Well, seeing all you crazy fatties, throwing around dollar bills and cans of Pabst has made me think that maybe I should participate, because that just looks like a lot of fun.
So this is where I need help, and here are my questions;
- If I plan to do races in the SoCal Prestige, should I get a USAC license, or just get one-day licenses? Do I even *need* a license?
- I've never raced. For CX I start as Cat4? There's no CX Cat5? And I'm 31 years old, so I have to compete in Masters? Or... ?
- SoCal Prestige is sanctioned by the USAC which adopts UCI rules, so my disc-braked Lemond Poprad is out, yeah?
- Is there a better series to try racing for the first time?
- Do I need to move up north if I want to really have fun with this?
- Does anyone want to give a 52cm CX bikes and jerseys to a completely unexperienced rider who will commit to several races next season?

I don't have any answers to the questions you've posted, but I just thought I would comment on your decision to move into cyclocross. I'd be interested in your comments as to the difference between the different types of riding.
