Pretty much anything I have to say about Southern California's weather is to be ignored. I moved here from Milwaukee, Wisconsin where the current weather is 15°F but really feels like 1°F. And I can't say for sure, but I bet there's like, 3 feet of snow on the ground.
So considering that a 50°F, rainy day is better than that, I didn't let it stop me from heading into downtown LA to bum around on my day off.
I did, however, have the best cup of clam chowder of my life and then had the unique experience of riding thru Skid Row then the Flower District. This route offered an indescribable pair of contradictory aromas...
Anyways, I had no agenda except to a.) get out of the house and b.) go to Swrve to drop off a pair of unworn, in-the-box, vintage track shoes that were given to me but didn't fit.

It was a good visit; got to see some new products on the horizon and show off my new bag to Matt, who seemed to really appreciate its design, construction and their workmanship. And of course, I can't go near the Swrve office without leaving with something, so I picked up a wool s/s baselayer and a pair of no-show socks (made by SOS, who I'd never heard of but in my reading, found to be really awesome and oh my God I NEED these) to prepare for when the sun returns.
Let me pause for a moment to send you off to Streetsblog for highlights of today's City Council meeting, that included the potential anti-harassment ordinance.
And here's what else I learned yesterday:
- CapoForma's Le Rain Cape works remarkably well. In SoCal, I don't feel I need a full on raincoat that costs $100+. So this guy for $20, is perfect. Also, this whole time I thought they were being snooty and French, until I went to their site to get that link. Turns out it's called the Limited Edition Rain Cape...
- The Watts Towers (seen from my Metro Blue Line train) are not as tall as I expected. I had always been looking out the wrong side, but they're like, *right there*, duh.
- The Mission Workshop Vandal, as promised and not surprisingly, is very waterproof. Everything inside = dry and the outside dried out super fast. Also, in using the bag more, I'm really finding it to be user-friendly. Getting in and out of it when I need to has been a breeze. Still really really impressed with it.
- My Planet Bike SuperFlash, surprisingly, is *not* waterproof. It started turning itself back on after I got home (creepy), and I found it full of water. However, a quick email to them confirmed this is not normal, and they're replacing it. Stoked on them right now too.
- Wool socks really do stay warm when soaking wet.
- Not only can you have a monetary value on a TAP card, but you can use said value to purchase passes to be added to said TAP card. So for the duration of said pass, your value is not debited with each tap.
- Beans, fideo and enchiladas taste better when a.) your lovely wife makes them for you and b.) you've been out riding in the rain all day.
